5.1.4 Engagement — Are people reacting to you?

Visibility gets you noticed. Engagement gets you remembered.

Engagement is the conversation layer where attention becomes relationship.

The question shifts from "did they see it?" to "did they care enough to respond?" Five signal types tell the story across platforms. Likes and reactions are quick approval. Comments go deeper: someone cared enough to add their voice. Shares and reposts deliver the strongest endorsement, because someone is amplifying your message into their own network. Saves on Instagram are quiet but valuable, often worth three to five likes in intent. Direct messages are the highest-intent layer, the private conversation that has real follow-through. The Engagement Rate formula, total engagements divided by impressions multiplied by one hundred, makes platform-specific benchmarking possible.

The five engagement signals to read across platforms:

  • Likes and reactions, the surface-level approval signal
  • Comments, the deeper resonance that adds voice to your message
  • Shares and reposts, the amplification signal of strongest endorsement
  • Saves, the utility signal of content people will return to
  • Direct messages, the highest-intent private engagement
